Celebrating the life of
William Sampson Stout
Passed away on February 05, 2024
William Sampson Stout, 96, died at the Marshes of Skidaway Island in Savanah, GA on February 5, 2024. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph C. Stout of Plymouth, MA. Born in Boston, he attended Deerfield Academy and Dartmouth College.
Bill’s business career included sales for ALCOA, stockbroking for RW Pressprich & Co where he helped Ross Perot’s EDS go public and Dyflex Corp as a sales representative for North American Management Company. He served in the Marines and was a Trustee of Brookline Savings Bank. His legacies include the “new” campus of the Dexter School in Brookline, MA where as a Trustee he proposed adding an 8th grade, headed the building committee and saw the completion of the school’s construction in time for his son to be an 8th grader.
Bill played hockey in one of the first NCAA national finals and was a great skier, golfer, tennis player and sailor. He was a member of The Country Club in Brookline, The Landings Club in Savannah and Cohasset Yacht Club. His Dixieland clarinet hobby led to his playing at Boston’s Symphony Hall, the White House Christmas Congressional Ball, the Pirates House in Savannah and putting on Bill Stout Jazz nights at the Landings.
Bill is known for hosting dinners featuring Cuttyhunk mélange, Mount Gay and fantastic true stories like facing a pistol drawn from a pillow by a Kentucky moonshiner, tribal warfare in the hills of New Guinea and swimming behind his mother in a rowboat to overcome polio in his left arm. His greatest achievement was marrying Ellen Simonds whom he met skiing at Stowe. He denies getting tangled in her skies while trying to cut in line. Bill and Ellen were married for 55 years until her passing in 2008.
Bill is survived by his son, William S. Stout, Jr., daughter-in-law Janet D. Stout, daughter, Ellen L. Stout, grandson, William S. Stout, his wife, Molly A. Stout, granddaughter, Julia S. Puff, her husband Charles Puff and great grandchildren, Callen R. Stout and Daphne A. Stout.
A memorial service is being planned and will be announced at a later date.
